The distance is a short one, but due to the strong drafts the boat trip takes more than hour in one way.
As there is no airport on Formentera, the visitors can only came here by the sea. During the tourist season there are plenty of boats waiting for visitors in Ibiza, necessary only is to check the return hour.
The boats go directly to one of the beaches, or to the port La Savina, where is a bus stop, car and bicycle rental, the island is so small, that one can walk to all the destinations, but
the heat could make the journey to extensive, and finally the taxi is the best way to go around Formentera.
With only 4 thousand of habitants Formentera is the smallest of Balearic Islands, the shortage of water deposits limit also the number of hotels and hostales, most of them booked by the tourist agencies during the summer, and closed during the winter time.
The name of the island cames from Roman Frumentaria (granary) , from the time, where it remained an importand food supply for the Empire.
Also, similar to Ibiza, the salt has been processed here,still there are salty lake and salt dump near the port.
The capital Sant Francesc Xavier, about two miles from the port features the old fortress-like church, some shops and the restaurants.
But Formentera tempts the visitors not with the shops but with the beaches.
The best are around Es Pujols and along the cape Es Trucadors- Llevant and Illetes.
Worth mention are also Platja de Migjorn, Platja de Tramuntana in the nothern part of the island, rocky cove Calla Encasta and Cala Saona.
Nudism on the beaches in Formentera is not only accepted, but became almost required.
Forget the swim suits, but remember about the sun oils and the glasses, the Mediterrenean sun is HOT.
